September 2008

Description:This is my first bead embroidery using different patterns than my usual jewelry. My September circle is all about Panama, where I was for September. The cab is a mini-mola, which I also use in my jewelry. (If you would like to see my jewelry incorporating these small molas, go back to the Gallery and click on the link in the description of this particular Album.) Molas are an art form created by the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands of Panama. It is a reverse appliqué of several different cloths, using fine embroidery too. The Kuna women use them as part of their blouses, one in the front and one on the back. I have had mine custom designed for my jewelry by Helene Breebaart, an internationally renown clothing designer who has a group of Kunas working exclusively for her. There are many other elements on my piece as well. I always use pearls, and there is some lavender Jade, a Peruvian opal, a shell I collected on the beach at Coronado, and a red glass heart shown, as my heart is in Panama, a wonderful and beautiful country. I used lots of glass flowers & leaves as Panama is so lush, and the colors remind of being in Panama.
